  • clot activators or silicated glass tubes can affect the levels of free thyroid hormones detected in the sample (Alexander et al., 2017; Ross et al., 2016). 
  • separator gels may lead to falsely elevated free hormone levels due to hormone diffusion into the gel, while plain tubes without additives might better preserve the integrity of the sample (Warner & Beckett, 2010). 
  • Heparin tubes affect the binding of thyroid hormones to their transport proteins and may displace thyroid hormones from their binding sites, resulting in an artificial increase in the measured levels of free thyroid hormones (Warner & Beckett, 2010).
  • EDTA chelation can indirectly influence thyroid hormone measurements by altering the binding dynamics between thyroid hormones and their transport proteins. By binding to calcium ions, EDTA can disrupt the equilibrium between free and bound thyroid hormones, resulting in artificially elevated levels of free thyroid hormones (Kaplan et al., 2003).
  • EDTA can change the sample’s pH and ionic strength, impacting the stability and integrity of thyroid hormones. It can also affect the conformation of thyroid hormone-binding proteins, changing their affinity for thyroid hormones and, consequently, the measured levels of free hormones (Ross et al., 2016). Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) tubes may absorb thyroid hormones, affecting test results.
